Koreaans sjamanistisch ritueel met zang, dans en muziek in het Tropentheater
Op vrijdag 17 maart staat de Koreaanse sjamaan Park Byong-Chon met zijn Jindo Ssitgim Gut
Preservation Group op het podium van het Tropentheater te Amsterdam. Tezamen zullen zij het
zogenaamde ssitgim gut-ritueel uitvoeren. Jacques-Yves Le Docte leidt de voorstelling in.
Het Ssitgim gut-ritueel
In de Koreaanse cultuur betekent sterven niet het einde. Het is juist een nieuw begin: van een volgend
leven, in de hemel of het hiernamaals. Deze transitie kan echter niet plaatsvinden zonder de ziel van
de overledene te zuiveren van alle zware en trieste herinneringen van diens leven. Dit zuiveren
gebeurt tijdens het zogenaamde ssitgim gut-ritueel.
De naam is afkomstig van het werkwoord 'ssikkida', hetgeen zoveel betekent als 'iemand
wassen'. 'Gut' is de algemene Koreaanse term voor een sjamanistische ceremonie. De ssitgim gut is
niet alleen heilzaam voor de overledene. Ook de zielen van de 'achterblijvers' worden getroost en
gezuiverd.
Park Byong-Chon en de Jindo Ssitgim Gut Preservation Group
Park Byong-Chon is een tan’gol of sjamaan van het Zuidwest-Koreaanse eiland Jindo. Zijn familie houdt
zich al meer dan 250 jaar bezig met sjamanisme. Samen met drie zangers, twee dansers en vijf muzikanten
vormt hij de Jindo Ssitgim Gut Preservation Group. Samen voeren ze delen uit van het traditionele
zuiveringsritueel ssitgim gut. Het is de enige groep ter wereld die dit specifieke ritueel beheerst. De
Zuid-Koreaanse regering beschouwt de groep dan ook als cultureel ambassadeur.
De muziek
Muziek van sjamanistische rituelen, met zijn langzame, meditatieve tempo, verschilt doorgaans
duidelijk van alle andere muzieksoorten. In veel Koreaanse provincies is echter sprake van een
duidelijke overlap tussen seculiere en sjamanistsiche muziek. Sjamanisme heeft de afgelopen twee
decennia een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de culturele en artistieke zelfbeschikking van Zuid-Korea.
Inleiding door Jacques-Yves Le Docte (20.30 uur)
Voorafgaand aan het ritueel verzorgt Jacques-Yves Le Docte een inleiding in het Engels van
ongeveer dertig minuten. Na een korte pauze begint het ritueel zelf rond 21.00 uur.
De heer Le Docte programmeerde de afgelopen zeven jaar de jazz- en wereldmuziekconcerten in het
Paleis voor Schone Kunsten van Brussel, en is co-directeur en mede-oprichter van het Brusselse
culturele centrum Maison de la Création. Sinds 1999 bestudeert hij de muzikale tradities van Korea.
Deze bijzondere voorstelling is mede mogelijk gemaakt door de Korea Foundation.

Korean shamanistic ritual with song, dance and music in the Tropentheater
On Friday March 17th, the Korean shaman Park Byong-Chon will occupy the stage of
Amsterdam’s Tropentheater, together with his Jindo Ssitgim Gut Preservation Group. They will
perform the so-called ssitgim gut-ritual. Jacques-Yves Le Docte will introduce the
performance.
The Ssitgim gut-ritual
In Korean culture, dying is not the end. It is rather a new beginning: of a next life, in heaven or in the
afterlife. However, this transition cannot take place without cleansing the soul of the deceased of all
the heavy and sad memories of their life. This cleansing is what happens in the so-called ssitgim gutritual.
The name is derived from the verb 'ssikkida', which means something along the lines of ‘to
wash someone’. 'Gut' is the common Korean name for a shamanistic ceremony. The ssitgim gut is not
only beneficial for the deceased. The souls of those left behind are also comforted and cleansed.
Park Byong-Chon and the Jindo Ssitgim Gut Preservation Group
Park Byong-Chon is a tan’gol or shaman of the south-west Korean island of Jindo. His family has been
involved in shamanism for over 250 years. Together with three singers, two dancers and five musicians, he is the
Jindo Ssitgim Gut Preservation Group. They will perform several parts of the traditional cleansing ritual
ssitgim gut. It’s the only group in the world that have mastered this specific ritual. The Korean
government considers the group to be cultural ambassadors.
The music
Music of shamanistic rituals, with its slow, meditative tempo, is usually distinct from all other forms of
music. However, in a lot of Korean provinces there clearly is an overlap between secular and
shamanistic music. In the last two decades, shamanism has played an important part in the cultural
and artistic self-determination of Korea.
Introduction by Jacques-Yves Le Docte (20.30 hours)
Preceding the ritual, Jacques-Yves Le Docte will do an introduction in English of about thirty minutes.
After a short break, the ritual itself will commence at around 21.00 hours.
Mr. Le Docte has been programming the world music and jazz concert series in Palais des Beaux-Arts
in Brussels. He is also the co-founder and co-director of the Brussels culture centre Maison de la
Création. Since 1999 he has been studying the musical traditions of Korea.
