Bij SCHUNCK* zoeken we altijd de volgende stap. Daarom betrekken we jou actief bij
onze exposities over modernisme, erfgoed
en stadscultuur. We leven in een tijd van
radicalen en extremen. Iedereen lijkt tegen.
Waar zijn we voor? Is er nog een midden?
En jij? Kijk je terug of vooruit? Op welk
punt sta jij? Kunstenaars geven vorm aan
wat onderhuids speelt. Zij kiezen vaak een
extreem perspectief ten opzichte van de
wereld. Juist daarom zetten zij dingen op
scherp en op de agenda. Of is wat zij maken
gewoon raak, kwetsbaar en mooi? Doe mee
en kleur je punt.

SCHUNCK* is always looking to take the
next step. That’s why we actively involve
you in our exhibitions about modernism,
heritage, and urban culture. We live in a time
of radicals and extremes. When everyone
seems to be against something, it’s time to
ask the question: what are we for? Is there
still a middle ground? What about you? Do
you look to the past or to the future? What
stance do you take? Artists depict the things
simmering just under the surface. They often
choose to represent an extreme perspective,
which allows them to highlight issues and get
them on the public agenda. That’s also what
makes their creations moving, vulnerable,
and beautiful. Join in and colour your world.

SPIELEREI is een internationale groepstentoon­
stelling met historische en hedendaagse inter­
actieve kunst. Kinetische en Op-art gerelateerde
werken uit de jaren 50 t/m 70 spiegelen zich
in installaties en interventies van hedendaagse
kunstenaars. Uitgangspunt is het manifest
‘Assez de Mystifications’ (Genoeg Misleiding)
van het Franse kunstenaarscollectief Groupe de
Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) uit 1963.
SPIELEREI is an international group exhibition
with historic and contemporary interactive art.
Kinetic and optical art influences from the fifties to
the seventies are reflected in the installations and
interventions by contemporary artists. Their work
is based on the 1963 manifest ‘Assez de Mystifi­
cations’ (Enough Mystification) by the French
artist collective Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel
(GRAV).

Dit jaar krijgt Roland Schimmel de eer om de
nieuwe muurschildering in het trappenhuis
van het SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis te maken. De
kunstenaar – die in 2015 nog de Akademieprijs
Astronomie en Kunst won – speelt in op de
visuele zintuigen en Op-art. De muurschildering
sluit daarmee aan bij de tentoonstelling
SPIELEREI (zie pagina 5).

This year, Roland Schimmel has the honour of
creating a new mural in the SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis.
The artist, who won the 2015 Academy Prize for
Astronomy and Art (Akademieprijs Astronomie en
Kunst), plays with visual perception and Op-art.
This is what connects the mural to the SPIELEREI
exhibition (see page 5).

Documentaire expositie over de rol die de
befaamde museumman Willem Sandberg en
het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam speelden in
Heerlen. De samenwerking tussen Sandberg en
burgemeester Van Grunsven kreeg vorm aan
het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en zette
Heerlen op de kaart als innovatief en dynamisch
centrum. Dit najaar verschijnt tevens de bijbe­
horende publicatie.
Documentary exhibition about the role played
by the famous Dutch museum curator Willem
Sandberg and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
in Heerlen. The collaboration between Sandberg
and Mayor Van Grunsven began at the end of the
Second World War and helped to position Heerlen
as an innovative and dynamic city. The accompa­
nying publication will be released this autumn.

Paul Toornend en Jelle Post presenteren drie
nieuwe series computer gegenereerde fotower­
ken die onder andere gebaseerd zijn op beelden
uit het Heerlense verleden. Daarbij maken zij
raakvlakken zichtbaar tussen internationale
voortrekkers in de kunsten en deze streek.
Paul Toornend and Jelle Post present three new
series of computer-generated photos based on
images of Heerlen’s past, among other things.
Their work reflects the relationship between this
region and international pioneers in the arts.

The unveiling of two permanent works of art in
the Beersdal and Rennemig districts kick off the
sixth edition of David Bade tekent Heerlen onder
de tafel: Bade’s tafeltje-dek-je-tour. This is a tour
of the locations from previous editions, where the
works of art were created between 2013 and 2015.

A surprising selection of the most recent additions
to the SCHUNCK* art collection. The pieces will be
on display in the lobby of the Town Hall, which has
traditionally displayed works from the municipal
art collection as well as temporary exhibitions.

Aad de Haas heeft een uitgebreid persoonlijk
oeuvre opgebouwd, in verschillende technieken.
Thema’s als macht, verleiding, religie en erotiek
gaf hij een belangrijke plaats hierin. Uitleg over
zijn werk gaf hij zelden tot nooit. Wel wist hij
precies wanneer een werk ‘af’ was, of zoals hij
het zelf zei: ‘als het zieltje erin zat’.
Aad de Haas has built up a comprehensive oeuvre
spanning various artistic techniques. Themes
like power, temptation, religion, and eroticism
played an important role in his work, which he
rarely explained or discussed. He did, however,
know when a painting was finished. Or when
he’d ‘captured the soul’, as he referred to it.

The Euregional Prize for Architecture will be
awarded for the twenty-sixth time for the best
graduation project in one of the five architecture
programmes in Liège, Hasselt, Maastricht, and
Aachen. SCHUNCK* organizes this prestigious
award. Thirty selected works by young design
talents in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion will be on
display.

Mountain Film Festival plaats in Heerlen. Deze
tentoonstelling behoort tot het randprogramma
en geeft onder andere inzicht in de kunsthis­
torische betekenis van (berg)landschap en de
technische aspecten van filmen onder extreme
omstandigheden.
The Dutch Mountain Film Festival will be held in
Heerlen on 11 and 12 February 2017. This exhibition
is part of the side programme and provides insight
into the art historical significance of mountain
landscapes and the technical aspects of filming in
extreme conditions.

keer de Parkstad Limburg Prijs uit. De genomi­

hebben een kunstzinnige relatie met Nederlands
of Belgisch Limburg. De expositie toont een
overzicht van hun werk.

foundation (foundation for the promotion of
Limburg-based artists) will present the Parkstad
Limburg Prize for the sixth time on Saturday 10
December 2016. The nominated artists must be
35 or younger and have an artistic relationship
with Dutch or Belgian Limburg. The exhibition
presents an overview of their work.

Als Aad de Haas aan het werk was las zijn echt­
genote Nel hem vaak voor. Van Tolstoj, Reve
en Sartre tot Hemingway. Op basis van zijn
favoriete literatuur ontstonden prenten die naar
onderwerp en sfeer direct of indirect herkenbaar
zijn. In deze tentoonstelling komen kunst en
literatuur opnieuw samen.
When Aad de Haas was working, his wife Nel
would often read to him. From Tolstoy and Reve
to Sartre and Hemingway. His favourite literature
inspired him to create prints that could be identi­
fied, directly or indirectly, by their subject matter
and style. This exhibition is a marriage between
art and literature.

SCHUNCK* museum depots to unearth hidden

their natural habitat: museum crates. In doing so,

SCHUNCK* beschikt over een compacte kunst­
collectie. Een levendige afspiegeling van de
ontwikkelingen binnen de Nederlandse schil­
derkunst na 1950. De collectie, die in 60 jaar is
opgebouwd, groeit nog steeds. In de hal van
het Raadhuis van Heerlen kun je de laatste aan­
kopen bekijken.
SCHUNCK* has its own art collection: a modest
but lively reflection of the developments in Dutch
painting after 1950. The collection, acquired over
the course of sixty years, is still growing to this
day. You can admire the most recent acquisitions
in the lobby of Heerlen’s Town Hall.

Een doek vormt de basis waarop sinds eeuwen
meesterwerken worden gemaakt. In de heden­
daagse kunst is het doek tot veel meer geworden
dan alleen een drager van verf. Het canvas is
telkens opnieuw uitgevonden. Als stof, textuur
en bewerkbaar materiaal. Paint It Soft is een
interactieve tentoonstelling waarin artistieke
werkprocessen tot op de draad ontrafeld wor­
den.
Canvasses have been used for centuries to create
artistic masterpieces. In contemporary art, however,
the canvas is more than just medium for paint;
it is being continuously reinvented. As a fabric, a
texture, and as a workable material. Paint it Soft
is an interactive exhibition that unravels artistic
work processes.

Voor de derde keer werken SCHUNCK* en de
Heerlense middelbare school nauw samen voor
het eindexamenwerk van het vak Beeldende
Vormgeving. Dit jaar onderzoeken de leerlingen
aan de hand van de expositie Paint It Soft vragen
uit de fundamentele schilderkunst, waarna ze
een expositie inrichten.
SCHUNCK* and the Heerlen secondary school
are collaborating for the third time on the final
exam work for the Visual Design course. This year,
the pupils will use the Paint it Soft exhibition to
examine fundamental painting issues and then
create their own exhibition.
Naar aanleiding van de tweede editie van het
Pro Freestyle Event presenteert SCHUNCK*
een tentoonstelling over de raakvlakken tussen
skateboarding, BMX, graffiti en beeldende kunst.
Absolute Event Horizon beschrijft de lijn die
binnen en buiten van elkaar scheidt. Aan zet is
de verbeelding om deze grenzen te verkennen
en nieuwe ruimtes te claimen.
Het Pro Freestyle Event vindt van 29 juni t/m
2 juli 2017 plaats rondom het SCHUNCK*
Glaspaleis.
Following the success of the second edition of the
Pro Freestyle Event, SCHUNCK* proudly presents
an exhibition on the relationship between skate­
boarding, BMXing, graffiti, and visual art. Absolute
Event Horizon describes the line that separates
inside and out. The imagination is put to the test
as the boundaries are pushed and new spaces are
claimed.

In 1944 vluchtte Aad de Haas van Rotterdam
naar het Zuid-Limburgse Ingber vanwege de
oorlog. Rotterdam bleef zijn geliefde stad. Hij
deed vergeefse pogingen om terug te keren.
De geselecteerde werken schetsen een beeld
van het Rotterdam uit zijn herinnering: kenmer­
kende plekken, dingen en mensen.
2016/2017
In 1944, Aad de Haas fled Rotterdam for Ingber in
South Limburg during the war. Rotterdam always
held a special place in his heart, but his many
attempts to return were all in vain. The selected
works portray De Haas’ memories of Rotterdam:
important people, places, and things.

Kunst- en architectuurprojecten in de wijk
zorgen voor verbinding tussen bewoners onder­
ling en organisaties. Zij bevorderen ambitie,
talentontwikkeling, cohesie en dynamiek. Ook
in 2016/2017 gaan we hiermee door samen met
David Bade en het Deense kunstenaarscollectief
SUPERFLEX.
Art and architectural projects in the neighbour­
hood create connections between residents and
organizations, and promote initiative, development
of talent, cohesion, and dynamism. We will be
continuing this in 2016/2017 together with David
Bade and the Danish artists’ group SUPERFLEX.
