Let’s Talk About Soil !
Most people are unaware of the wonderland that is hidden below our feet. And yet,
without soils we would not live. We could not feed ourselves, produce our clothes or
the fuel and medicinal products we need. Soils recycle waste materials back into
nutrients, store and filter water, and are home to a breath-taking amount of
organisms.
All of this happens ‘hidden’ from our eyes. That’s why it is high time to put soils in the
spotlight! In collaboration with Heerenstraat Theater Wageningen and Lazuur food
community, ISRIC-World Soil Information is organising a film & discussion event Let’s
Talk About Soil! on Friday, 25 September 2015, 19:30-22:30 hours.
Wageningen has the highest density of soil scientists in the Netherlands. So what
better place to hold an event that portrays the precious matter underfoot with some
of the finest films made this year? Following an introduction to soils, Let’s Talk
About Soil! will be screening:

‘Bodemboeren’: The new film by Fransjan de Waard and Joris van der Kamp on
agricultural pioneers of sustainable soil management. This is a sensitive portrait
of five Dutch farmers who use their own ways to observe and improve their
soils to produce healthy food without damaging the land. This provides fresh
views and sometimes surprising insights into the universe below our feet which
we so often take for granted. And it might change the way you do your
gardening.

‘The Art of Healing the Earth’: Renowned filmmaker and ‘ecosystems
ambassador’ John D. Liu – known to many through his powerful VPRO ‘Green
Gold’ documentaries – is on a quest to convince people that large-scale
restoration of land and soil is not only a possibility, but a necessity. His skilfully
pictured and narrated stories provide a first-hand account of what all of us can
do to facilitate the change to a human civilisation that better aligns with natural
ecological trends.
During the break, Lazuur will be offering some snacks from their range of regional
organic produce. What better way to explore how healthy soils produce healthy and
tasty food?
After the screenings, the filmmakers will be available for discussion. Everyone is
welcome to the event, and no prior knowledge on soils is required. Consider spending
just 3 hours of your life - it may forever change the way you look at the world!

Our soils are in danger
We often take soils and the services we derive of them for granted, for
something beyond human reach. In fact, soils and people have been sharing a
strong common destiny since the onset of agriculture-based civilisations. And in
many cases this has led to an unfavourable change in soil quality, e.g. through
topsoil erosion, soil pollution, or salinization. The current rate of soil degradation
is such that it threatens the capacity to meet the needs of future generations.
2015 – the International Year of Soils
Recognising the urgent need for action, the UN have declared 2015 as the
International Year of Soils. Under the motto of “Healthy soils for a healthy life”
soil-related activities and events are being organised all over the world to
increase awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security
and essential ecosystem functions, and to promote sustainable soil and land
management.
Did you know that later this year the UN will also decide on a set of Sustainable
Development Goals for the period 2015-2030 to follow the Millennium
Development Goals (2000-2015)? One of the targets that has been suggested is
a land degradation neutral world.

Let’s talk about soil!
Tijd: Vrijdag 25 september van 19.30 tot 22.30
Plaats: Heerenstraattheater, Molenstraat 1B in Wageningen
Veel mensen realiseren zich niet wat voor wonderlijke wereld de bodem is. Met zijn
grillige deeltjes, zijn ultrafijne wortelvertakkingen en zijn adembenemend aantal
soorten dieren en micro-organismen. Toch zouden we zonder de bodem niet kunnen
leven. We zouden geen eten hebben, geen kleren, geen helder water en geen
brandstoffen.
Tijd dus om de bodem in de spotlights te zetten. Op vrijdag 25 september organiseert
daarom het Wereldbodeminstituut ISRIC, samen met het Heerenstraat Theater en
Lazuur food community, een film- en discussieavond ‘Let’s Talk About Soil’. Dat
gebeurt in Wageningen, de stad met misschien wel de hoogste dichtheid aan
bodemwetenschappers ter wereld.
Na een introductie wordt Bodemboeren gedraaid, de nieuwe film van Fransjan de
Waard en Joris van der Kamp. Vijf innovatieve Nederlandse boeren laten er in zien
hoe ze, ieder op hun manier, de bodem observeren en verbeteren. Samen
presenteren ze een geheel nieuwe kijk op boeren. Waarbij ze gezond voedsel
produceren, zonder het land te beschadigen.
De tweede film is The art of Healing the Earth van de Australische filmmaker en
‘ecosystemen ambassadeur’ John D. Liu – bekend van de VPRO ‘Green Gold’
documentaire. Zijn prachtige beelden, uit onder andere China en Ethiopië, laten zien
hoeveel leven grootschalig herstel van verdroogd en geërodeerd land opbrengt. De
film leert dat mensen het lot van de bodem wel degelijk in handen kunnen nemen.
Na afloop is er een discussie met de filmmakers; in de pauze serveert Lazuur Food
Community hapjes. Iedereen is welkom, kennis van de bodem is niet vereist!

ACHTERGROND
Bodems in gevaar
De bodem en zijn diensten zien we vaak als iets vanzelfsprekends, iets dat bovendien
buiten onze macht ligt. Maar in feite zijn het lot van de bodems en de mensen die
erop leven altijd nauw met elkaar verweven geweest. Daar waar uitputting, vervuiling
of erosie grootschalige bodemdegradatie tot gevolg had, ging het meestal ook niet
goed meer met de gemeenschappen. De huidige mate van bodemdegradatie in de
wereld is nu zodanig, dat het de capaciteit om de mensheid nog van dienst te zijn
bedreigt.
2015 – Het Internationale Jaar van de Bodem
Omdat actie hard nodig is, heeft de VN 2015 uitgeroepen tot het Internationaal Jaar
van de Bodem. Onder het motto ‘Gezonde bodem voor een gezond leven’, worden dit
jaar wereldwijd aan bodem gerelateerde evenementen georganiseerd. Met als doel
bewustwording en promotie van duurzamer bodem- en landgebruik.
Later dit jaar zal de VN beslissen over een set van Sustainable Development Goals
voor 2015-2030, als een follow-up voor de Millennium Development Goals (20002015). Een van de gesuggereerde doelen is een wereld waarin net zoveel landherstel
is als landdegradatie.
