Invitation
The interaction between Architecture and Phenomenology has a history in the Sint-Lucas
School of Architecture, now Faculty of Architecture of the KU Leuven, Belgium.
Marc Richir is one of the most important representatives of the “new phenomenology in
France” (Gondek/Tengelyi). His contribution “Phénoménologie et architecture” (1996) and
his work “Fragments phénoménologiques sur le temps et l’espace” (2006) gave rise to the
organisation of a colloquium at our young Faculty. The colloquium focuses on the affective
and imaginative aspects of our anchorage in space and on the – successful or failing – forms
of symbolic investment in the lived space. Colleagues from the Sorbonne, CNRS-Paris, ULB,
UCL, HIW, the Department of Architecture KU Leuven and the University of Osaka
cooperate in this event.
Together with the architects of our Faculty, we discuss the role of “phantasia” in the making
of architecture. We gauge the critical capability of the “act of designing” related to the
important transformations public space experiences these days.

Le dialogue entre l’architecture et la phénoménologie fait partie d’une tradition à Sint-Lucas,
Ecole d’Architecture, maintenant la Faculté d’Architecture de la KU Leuven, Belgique.
L’oeuvre de Marc Richir marque un temps fort de la “nouvelle phénoménologie française”
(Gondek/Tengelyi). Avec “Phénoménologie et architecture” (1996) et “Fragments
phénoménologiques sur le temps et l’espace” (2006) elle jalonne la discussion entre
phénoménologie et architecture.
Notre jeune Faculté relève ce défi en organisant le 14 et 15 mai le colloque [Chora].
Réunissant des chercheurs de la Sorbonne, du CNRS-Paris, de l’ULB, UCL, HIW et du
Département d’Architecture de la KU Leuven, il met en exergue les fondements affectifs et
imaginatifs de l’espace vécu et explore les ressources de son institution symbolique, soit-elle
réussie ou défaillante.
Le rôle à attribuer à la “phantasia” pour l’acte même de l’architecture fera l’objet d’échanges
vifs avec les architectes de notre Faculté. N’est-ce pas – aussi – à elle que l’architecture doit
sa puissance critique et réussit à faire face aux transformations profondes de l’espace public?

Het gesprek tussen architectuur en fenomenologie kent een traditie in Sint-Lucas
Architectuur, nu Faculteit Architectuur van de KU Leuven, België.
Met Marc Richir nodigen we één van de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de “nieuwe
fenomenologie in Frankrijk” (Gondek/Tengelyi) uit. Zijn bijdrage “Phénoménologie et
architecture” (1996) en zijn werk “Fragments phénoménologiques sur le temps et l’espace”
(2006) bieden de concrete aanleiding voor een tweedaags colloquium aan onze jonge Faculteit
Architectuur. Het vestigt de aandacht op de affectieve en imaginatieve aspecten van onze
ruimte-verankering en op de - geslaagde of falende - vormen van symbolische investering van
de geleefde ruimte. Collega’s uit de Sorbonne, het CNRS-Paris, de ULB, de UCL, het HIW,
het Departement Architectuur van de KU Leuven en de Universiteit van Osaka verlenen
hieraan hun medewerking.
Samen met architecten uit onze Faculteit, stellen we de intrinsieke band tussen het
architecturaal ontwerp en de “fantasie-ruimtelijkheid” ter discussie. We peilen tevens naar de
kritische potentie, die de “act van architectureren” bezit voor de diepgaande transformaties,
die de publieke ruimte in onze tijd ondergaat.
