ABSTRACT: Conducted 2 studies in the Netherlands to test hypotheses derived from the cognitiveprocessing-of-cultural-products model (K. van Driel, 1995). The model, which specifies the cognitive
processes underlying judgements of cultural products (literature, theater, and architecture), is based on the
assumption that aesthetic judgements depend on the activity level of encoding, comparison, modification,
and performance in the rational, affective, and imaginary domains of the perceiver's consciousness. In
Study 1, the facet model underpinning a psychometric questionnaire measuring the intensity of these
assumed cognitive processes was fitted on data from 215 psychology students. In Study 2, 2 groups of Ss
completed the questionnaire with instructions to focus on a recently read good vs bad book. The results are
interpreted as corroborating the proposed model and the validity of the measures of the cognitive processes.
