Paideia: Education in Greek, Jewish, and Christian Traditions

Op vrijdag 5 februari 2016 om 15.30 uur zal Professor Evangelos Chrysos, Athene, de vijfde Dutch
Annual Lecture in Patristics houden, getiteld: ‘Paideia. Education in Greek, Jewish, and Christian
tradition’, in het auditorium van het Museum Catharijneconcent, Lange Nieuwstraat 38, Utrecht.
U bent van harte uitgenodigd deze lezing bij te wonen. Na afloop zal een receptie plaatsvinden.
Voor de Dutch Annual Lectures in Patristics wordt steeds een eminent geleerde uit binnen- of buitenland gevraagd die een belangrijke bijdrage heeft geleverd aan onze kennis van de vorming van
het christendom in de eerste eeuwen. De organisatoren menen dat een persoonlijk verhaal van een
wetenschapper van zeer hoog kaliber een bron van inspiratie kan zijn.
De Dutch Annual Lectures in Patristics zijn een initiatief van de Faculteit Katholieke Theologie
van de Universiteit van Tilburg en de Theologische Faculteit van de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam. Zij werken samen in het interuniversitair Centrum voor Patristisch Onderzoek.
Deelname is kosteloos. De organisatoren stellen het echter op prijs als u zich voor 1 februari 2016

Evangelos Chrysos
Evangelos Chrysos is Professor emeritus of Byzantine History at the University of Athens. He studied at the Universities of Thessaloniki and Bonn (PhD 1963, Dr theol. 1969). Before Athens he
taught for many years at the Universities of Ioannina and Cyprus and was visiting Professor at Universities in Austria, France, Germany and the United States. He is corresponding member of the
Austrian Academy. His research focuses on themes concerning the international and diplomatic
history, historical geography, the political and ecclesiastical administration, the patristic legacy in
Byzantium and the function of Church councils.
Paideia: Education in Greek, Jewish, and Christian Traditions
One way to learn about societies is to study their system of education, its priorities and its methods. The lecture is devoted to the objectives of the education of children in the classical and Hellenic Greek, the Jewish (biblical), and the Patristic traditions.
Het CPO
Aan het interuniversitair Centrum voor Patristisch Onderzoek/Centre for Patristic Research (CPO)
werken theologen, filologen en godsdienstwetenschappers samen om wetenschappelijk onderzoek
te doen naar de vroege kerk in haar historische en culturele context. In de vroege kerk, de tijd van
de kerkvaders, ontwikkelde zich het christelijk denken over God, de mens, de samenleving en de
schepping zich snel. Toen kreeg het christendom voor het eerst vorm. Vanaf het eerste begin werd
de nieuwe godsdienst mede gevoed door de culturele en filosofische stromingen van zijn tijd.
Naarmate de positie van de kerk sterker werd, ging zij op haar beurt ook meer en meer de cultuur
en de maatschappij beïnvloeden. Veel van de discussies en ontwikkelingen van toen zijn daarom
ook nu nog van belang. De leden van het CPO publiceren de resultaten van hun onderzoek in internationaal erkende wetenschappelijke tijdschriften op hun vakgebied, in internationale (congres-)bundels, lexica en boeken. Voorts organiseert het CPO regelmatig lezingen, symposia en congressen.
