A very warm welcome to our Organ Festival 2015. “MUSIC and SPACE’ is the common theme of this
festival. MUSIC: ancient and new music, classical and modern music, instrumental and vocal music,

De Rijp. Music creates space in our busy, overly occupied minds and can thus have a beneficial effect.
We are proud of the unique organs of Alkmaar. Because of their enormous international attraction,
young professional organists are coming to compete for the chance to win the great prize: the International Schnitger Organ Competiton. This has also attracted an international jury of top-experts ­
to come and share their knowledge and experience in the organ academy. The dedication of a large
group of volunteers, as well as the financial support of many generous contributors, have made it
possible for us to offer you this programme of great diversity. We are delighted to have you as our

Een oud middeleeuws gebruik bij iedere ommuurde stad was dat tijdens het openen en sluiten van
de stadspoorten de stadstrompetter op de toren een koraal ten gehore bracht. Van de stad Lübeck is
bekend dat de organist en raadsmuzikant Joachim Mandischer rond 1850 nog koralen vanaf de
Marientorens blies op zijn zink. Ook de Hollandse steden Alkmaar en Hoorn kenden deze traditie.
De Hoornse zilveren stadstrompet is nog te bewonderen in het Westfries museum. Tijdens het Orgel
Festival Holland zal deze mooie traditie weer in ere worden hersteld. Enkele koperblazers olv
­trompettist Simon Boerke zullen vanaf de Waagtoren Alkmaar overspoelen met muziek zodat
iedere Alkmaarder geconfronteerd wordt met "Music and Space".
TRUMPETBLOWERS FROM THE TOWER

In medieval cities it was customary for the city-trumpeteer to play a choral from the tower on ­
the city walls during the opening and locking of the gates. We know that in the city of Lübeck the
organist and town-hall musician Joachim Mandischer was still blowing chorals from the Marien
towers on his zinc in 1850. The Dutch cities of Alkmaar and Hoorn were also familiar with this
tradition. The silver city trumpet can still be admired at the Westfries Museum in Hoorn. During
Organ Festival Holland this fine tradition will be rehabilitated. A number of trumpet players, directed by Simon Boerke, will immerse Alkmaar with music from the Waag-tower, thus
confronting everyone in Alkmaar with “Music and Space”.

PIETER VAN DIJK
studeerde orgel bij Bert ­Matter
aan het Conservatorium in
­Arnhem. Hij vervolgde zijn ­­
studie bij Gustav Leonhardt,
Marie-Claire Alain en Jan Raas. Hij behaalde
­prijzen op de internationale orgelconcoursen in
Deventer (1979) en Innsbruck (1986). Pieter van
Dijk is organist van de Grote Sint Laurenskerk in
Alkmaar en stadsorganist van Alkmaar. Als docent
hoofdvak orgel is hij verbonden aan het Conserva­
torium van Amsterdam en de Hochschule für
Musik und Theater in Hamburg. Hij is een van de
artistiek leiders van het Orgelfestival Holland.
Naast zijn uitgebreide concertpraktijk, maakte
Pieter van Dijk verscheidene cd’s op de orgels van
de Alkmaarse Laurenskerk. Op het Van Hagerbeer/
Schnitger-orgel nam hij werken van Scheidemann
(Naxos) en Concerti van Bach (Hanssler) op. Bij de
heringebruikneming van het Van Covelens-orgel
­verscheen een cd met werken van Hofhaimer,
Schlick en Sweelinck. Hij publiceerde diverse
artikelen over ondermeer M. Weckmann, J.P.
Sweelinck en J.S. Bach. Pieter van Dijk is regel­
matig jurylid bij internationale orgelconcoursen.

PIETER VAN DIJK
studied organ with Bert Matter at the Arnhem
Conservatory. He continued his studies with
Gustav Leonhardt, Marie-Claire Alain and Jan
Raas and was a prize-winner at international
organ competitions at Deventer (1979) and
Innsbruck (1986). He is the organist of the ­
St. Laurenskerk and in addition the City
­Organist of Alkmaar and professor of organ ­
at the Conservatories of Amsterdam and
­Hamburg. In addition to concert engagements
throughout Europe, the USA, and Japan,
he made several recordings on historic instruments. ­On the Van Hagerbeer/ Schnitger-organ
he recorded works by Scheidemann (Naxos)
and Concerti by Bach (Hanssler). At the
­re-inauguration of the Van Covelens-organ he
published a cd with works by Hofhaimer,
­Schlick and Sweelinck. His publications include
articles on Matthias Weckmann, Sweelinck and
J.S. Bach. He is a regular jurymember at international organ competitions.
RAAF HEKKEMA
The saxophonist Raaf Hekkema plays concerts all over the world, performing mainly
his own arrangements. The solo cd ‘Paganini Caprices for Saxophone’ earned him
the German Echo Klassik ‘Instrumentalist of
the Year’ title. He has performed as soloist
with various orchestras and has given
­masterclasses in many countries. Hekkema
is co-founder of Calefax Reed Quintet ­
(since 1985), which undertakes projects
with dance-, theatre-, film-, animation- and
musical artists and performs and records all
over the world. Calefax has taken lessons
from, or worked with, experts in the field of
early music, including Paul Van Nevel,
­Bartold and Sigiswald Kuijken, Jan-Willem
de Vriend and Frans Brüggen. Calefax has
won various prizes and distinctions. From
2014 on, Raaf Hekkema is head of the
saxophone department at the Royal Conservatory ­The Hague.
FRED JACOBS
studied lute and theorbe with Anthony
Bailes at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He is a member and co-founder of
The Locke Consort, which is making a
name for itself in 17th Century English
chamber music. He is also a continuoplayer with The Gabrieli Consort and Players, The Parley of Instruments and the
Baroque Orchestra of the Dutch Bach Society. Since 1997 he contributes to all the
Monteverdi- and Cavalli productions of the
Monteverdi-ensemble of the Bayerische
Staatsoper in Munich. Fred Jacobs regularly
accompanies e.g.Johannette Zomer,
RAAF HEKKEMA
De saxofonist Raaf Hekkema
geeft concerten over de hele
wereld, waarbij hij voornamelijk
arrangementen van eigen hand
uitvoert. Voor zijn solo-cd Paganini Caprices for
saxophone werd hij onderscheiden met de titel
‘Instrumentalist of the Year’ door het Duitse Echo
Klassik. Als solist trad hij op met diverse orkesten
en gaf hij masterclasses in vele landen. Hekkema
is mede-oprichter van het Calefax Rietkwintet
(sinds 1985), dat projecten uitvoert met dans-,
theater,- film- animatie- en muziekkunstenaars
en over de hele wereld optreedt en opnames
maakt. Calefax ontving les of werkte samen met
deskundigen op het gebied van de renaissance en
barok, zoals Paul van Nevel, Barthold en Sigiswald
Kuijken, Jan-Willem de Vriend en Frans Brüggen.
Calefax won verscheidene prijzen en onder­
scheidingen. Raaf Hekkema is vanaf 2014 als
hoofdvakdocent saxofoon verbonden aan het
Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag.
FRED JACOBS
studeerde luit en theorbe ­

­Conservatiorium van Amsterdam.­
Hij is lid en medeoprichter van

Daniels en Maarten Koningsberger en is veel­vuldig
te gast op belangrijke festivals voor oude muziek
in Europa en de Verenigde Staten. Hij gaf master­
classes aan de conservatoria van Rotterdam,
­Arnhem en Amsterdam. Sinds 1995 is Fred Jacobs
als docent luit en theorbe verbonden aan het
Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
OTTO DE JONG
studeerde dwarsfluit bij Koos
Verheul en koor- en orkest­
directie bij Ed Spanjaard en ­
Lucas Vis. Als fluitist speelde hij
in verschillende orkesten en ensembles o.a het
Residentie Orkest in Den Haag. Als dirigent leidde
hij orkesten en ensembles van de meest uiteen­
lopende aard, o.a. Circle Percussion, Ensemble
d’Accord, het Centraal Kamerkoor in verschil­
lende theaterproducties.Van het Ouderen Song­
festival was hij meer dan 10 jaar artistiek leider.
Voor de organisatie Musicians Without Borders
heeft Otto de Jong diverse reizen gemaakt naar
ex-oorlogsgebieden in de Balkan, het Midden
Oosten, Rwanda en Noord Ierland om muziek­
workshops te geven aan kinderen in
vluchtelingen¬kampen en op scholen en om er
trainingen te geven aan toekomstige workshop­
leiders en docenten muziek. Otto de Jong dirigeert
het Regionaal Jeugdorkest Artiance sinds 1991 en
heeft daarmee verschillende opzienbarende
­producties gemaakt voor o.a. het Wereld Kinder­
festival, Terra festival en Kunstpalet. Verder zijn
er samenwerkingen geweest met internationale
artiesten als Mostar Sevdah Reunion en ­
Aly N’Diae Rose.

Orkest in The Hague. He has conducted a wide
variety of orchestras and ensembles, such as
Circle Percussion, Ensemble d’Accord, the
Centraal Kamerkoor, in various productions. ­
He was the artistic director of the Songfestival
for Seniors for over 10 years. For ‘Musicians
without Borders’ Otto de Jong travelled a
­number of times to previous warzones in the
Balkan, the Middle East, Rwanda and Northern
Ireland to give musical workshops for children
in refugee camps and schools and to train
future workshop tutors and music teachers.
Otto de Jong conducts the Regional Youth
Orchestra Artiance since 1991 and has made
some outstanding productions, such as the
World Children’s Festival, Terra Festival and
Kunstpalet. There have also been some
­co-productions with international artists, such
as Mostar Sevdah Reunion en Aly N’Diae Rose.
ELINA KEIJZER
studied recorder, organ and church music at the
Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Walter van
Hauwe, Jacques van Oortmerssen and Hans
van Nieuwkoop. She later took a diploma in
choral direction at the Conservatory of Alkmaar
with Harold Lenselink. She works as a cantororganist for the Protestant parish of Santpoort
Noord, where she accompanies the weekly
services. She teaches organ and recorder at the
arts- and creativity centre Triade and is also
choirmaster of the school choir “Fonduyn”, both
in Den Helder. She furthermore teaches organ at
Artiance in Alkmaar. She regularly performs both
on the organ and the recorder, at home as well
as abroad.

Verder is zij docent orgel bij Artiance te Alkmaar.
Zij geeft regelmatig concerten in binnen- en
buitenland op orgel en blokfluit.
WIJNAND VAN KLAVEREN

van Amsterdam. He won several prizes in
improvisation (Louis van Dijk) and chamber
music including the ‘Vriendenkrans’prize, and
the ‘Wolfgang Jacobi Wettbewerb’ in Münich.
Many of his arrangements and compositions
have been recorded by Arno Bornkamp, Ties
Mellema and their quartets. His ‘Trois Pièces
de Fantaisie sur un thème de Berlioz’ for alto
sax and piano has been published by Lémoine
in Paris. Recently, he completed a mass for
baritone and organ, which has been recorded,
as well as evening canticles for choir and
organ in the Anglican Tradition.

musik der Moderne (2002) en de Vriendenkrans
van het Concertgebouw (2004). ­Hij componeerde
en arrangeerde voor vele instrumentale ensem­
bles. Zijn Trois Pièces de Fantaisie sur un thème
de Berlioz voor altsaxofoon en piano zijn uitgege­
ven bij Uitgeverij Henry Lemoine te Parijs. Hij
schreef vrij werk voor orgel, brassband, harmo­
nieorkest en saxofoon. ­

meer dan 30 jaar lesgegeven aan conservatoria en

is a Trumpet and Cornetto player specialising
in music from the Renaissance to Classical
periods. He has performed and recorded with
many leading ensembles. David has been at
the forefront of the revival of the baroque
trumpet. He is principal trumpet with Frans
Brüggen's Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century
(now playing with guest-directors) since its
inception in 1981. David has taught at conservatories for over 30 years and is proud that
many of his ex-students are now valued colleagues. He has given masterclasses worldwide.
He is currently Professor of Natural Trumpet at
the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In 2007
David became apprentice to master-craftsman
Frank Tomes. In 2009 he established his ­
own workshop and began making and selling
trumpets. He can offer instruments that
­combine historical accuracy with innate
­professional utility.

vaste gamba-solist van de Nederlandse Bach­
vereniging. Mieneke van der Velden heeft diverse
solo-cd’s opgenomen, maar ook meegewerkt aan
opnamen in verschillende ensembles. Zij is in het
bezit van twee originele franse instrumenten, een
pardessus de viole uit 1768, gebouwd door Ludovic
Guersan en een basgamba uit 1617, gebouwd door
Antoine Despont. Ze is docente viola da gamba
aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en sinds
april 2009 tevens aan het Koninklijk Conservato­
rium te ­Den Haag.

actively involved in the organ activities of the
St. Laurens’ Church in Alkmaar with its famous
historic organs. Together with City Organist
Pieter van Dijk he forms the artistic direction of
Organfestival Holland. He has made several
cd-recordings and regularly publishes articles,
especially about the organ-history of Alkmaar.
In 2012 a 32-volume edition of the collected
works of the Dutch composer, organist and
Bach-pioneer Johannes Gijsbertus Bastiaans
(1812-1875) was published by Donemus, ­
for which he took care of the organ works.

TOM WILKINSON
is University Organist and Director of Chapel
Choirs at the University of St Andrews. Born in
1985, he studied at St Mary's Music School,
Edinburgh, going on to become Organ Scholar
of Truro Cathedral, Cornwall. In 2004 he took
up the Organ Scholarship at The Queen's
College, Oxford, and graduated with first-class
honours in Music in 2007. In the same year,
Tom took the Fellowship Diploma of the Royal
College of Organists. From 2008-9 he held the
position of Assistant Director of Music at
Chelmsford Cathedral. Tom has recently been
awarded a Master's degree in Early Keyboard
Performance, with distinction, from the University of Edinburgh. Tom Wilkinson is also known
as a fine exponent of contemporary music,
having premiered music by James MacMillan
and performed as concerto soloist with
­Scotlandís Red Note Ensemble.

Pleet (VK). In 1992 ontving hij als eerste cellist de
Nederlandse Muziek Prijs. Hij speelt in concert­
zalen over de hele wereld. Samen met violisten
Patricia Kopatchinskaia en Isabelle van Keulen ­
en altviolist Lilli Maijala vormt Pieter Wispelwey
sinds 2012 het succesvolle ensemble ‘QuartetLab’. Wispelwey concerteerde en soleerde met
toonaangevende orkesten wereldwijd en heeft ­
een grote reputatie opgebouwd. Pieter Wispelwey
maakte talrijke opnames, waaronder de Bach
Suites, de Beethoven Sonates, Dvoraks Cello­
concert, de Britten Suites en vele andere. ­
Zijn grootste cd project, samen met Paolo

PIETER WISPELWEY
is one of the first generation of cellists mastering the modern as well as the baroque cello.
With his own authentic style, interpretation and
phenomenal technique he won the hearts of
many critics and audiences. His repertoire
reaches from Bach to Schnittke, Elliot Carter
and compositions written especially for him.
His teachers were Dicky Boeke and Anner
Bijlsma and later Paul Katz (US) and William
Pleet (UK). In 1992 he was the first cellist to be
awarded the Dutch Music Prize. He plays in
concerthalls all over the world. Together with
violinists Patricia Kopatchinskaia and Isabelle
van Keulen and viola-player Lilli Maijala, Pieter
Wispelwey plays since 2012 in the successful
ensemble ‘Quartet-Lab’. Wispelwey has played
with renowned orchestras all over the world
and built up a great reputation. Pieter Wispelwey made many recordings, among them the

Tijdens het 11e Internationaal Schnitger Orgelconcours in Alkmaar
wordt aan jonge talentvolle organisten en orgelstudenten de kans
­geboden op de weergaloze Alkmaarse orgels hun kunnen te tonen ­
voor een internationale jury. Hoe via deze historische instrumenten ­
de muziek optimaal in de ruimte te presenteren is een van de grote
opgaven. Welke klankkleuren en combinaties worden er gekozen, ­
wat is het juiste tempo, hoe moet je articuleren en timen, hoe reageren
de orgels: allemaal keuzes die invloed zullen hebben op het muzikale
eindresultaat. Zullen jury en publiek het eens zijn over de uiteindelijke
prijswinnaars? Spannende vragen over toekomstmuziek!

talented organists and organ students are given the chance to show their
skills on the unequalled organs in Alkmaar before an international jury.

of forgotten works from Saxony´s music
­history. With his Freiberg Cathedral Music
Ensemble and Chordae Freybergensis he also
explores the original sound of the Renaissance. Since 2010 Albrecht has been the
president of the Gottfried Silbermann
­International Society. He is the artistic director
of the renowned music festival SilbermannTage and of the Gottfried Silbermann
­International Organ Competition. He attaches
great importance to varied programs; illustrates the diversity of organ music and new
aspects of Silbermann´s organ design. He
represents the city of Freiberg as an artistic
director in the European Cities of Historical
Organs (ECHO). Albrecht Koch regularly plays

is known worldwide for her compelling programs and presentations of organ music.
She is an accomplished teacher, having held
teaching positions at Stanford University
and the Royal Academy of Music, London.
Winner of the Saint Albans International
Organ Playing Competition in 1985, ­
Dr. Marshall has been a recitalist, workshop
leader and adjudicator at seven National
Conventions of the American Guild of
­Organists. From 1996-2000, she served ­
as a project leader for the Göteborg Organ
Research Center (GOArt). Acclaimed as a
specialist in early music, Kimberly Marshall
has performed on many of the most significant historical organs in Europe. She is also
a noted authority on contemporary organ
repertoire, especially the music of György
Ligeti. Her cd’s and videos display the
breadth of her interests, from Arnolt Schlick
and 16th-century Italian composers to Chen
Yi’s Dunhuang Fantasy. Dr. Marshall currently holds the Patricia and Leonard
­Goldman Endowed Professorship in Organ
at Arizona State University.

Karin Nelson (Gothenburg, Sweden) was born
in Skellefteå in the far north of Sweden. ­
She studied music and education at the Piteå

harpsichord studies followed at the Conservatory van Amsterdam. Karin Nelson is now
­professor in organ and church music at the

in Utrecht and thereafter Musicology. He also
acquired a soloist diploma harpsichord in The
Hague. His major interest is for baroque music,
especially by Bach. He has won prizes at international competitions in Brugge, Toulouse and
Nijmegen and has conducted much of Bach’s
work. At present he can be heard and seen at
allofbach.com, an internetsite on which all of
Bach’s music will be placed in the coming
years. He teaches organ at the Conservatory of
Utrecht and the Lemmens Institute in Louvain,
giving much attention to improvisation and the
full range of the organ repertoire.He has
played concerts in most European countries
and gave classes in Toulouse, Haarlem, Brno,
Oundle and Mallorca. Reitze has been organist
in Breukelen and Zaltbommel, is a composer
and made various cd-recordings. In 2000 he
took the initiative to organize the “Festival voor
de Wind”, of which he is the artistic director.
This festival combines the organ with other
performing arts. With Dance Works Rotterdam
he plays a succesful series of concerts of

He completed his Doctorate in 2012 at the
State Conservatory in Kraków. He is currently
Associate Professor at the State Conservatories in Lódz and Kraków. He won numerous
prizes in various competitions, among others:
first prize at the Arp Schnitger Organ Competition in Bremen (2010), first prize at the Willem
Hermans Organ Competition in Pistoia (2006)
and second prize at the Franz Schmidt Organ
Competition in Kitzbühel (2006). Since 2013
he is Artist in Residence at the Artur Rubinstein
Philharmonic Hall in Lódz, with two historical
organs: a Saxon Baroque and a German
Romantic instrument. He is the Artistic Director
of the Organ Festival at the historic Andreas

De 13e Internationale Orgelacademie Alkmaar zal worden gehouden ­
van 26 juni t/m 4 juli 2015 en bestaat uit workshops, masterclasses,
concerten en excursies. Deelnemers werken onder leiding van internationale specialisten aan repertoire dat speciaal is afgestemd op de karakteristieken van de lesorgels. De lessen vinden o.a. plaats in de Grote Sint
Laurenskerk met de beide wereldvermaarde orgels - het Van Covelens
orgel (1511) en het Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger orgel (1646/1725) - ­
en op de schitterende Müller orgels van de Lutherse Kerk (1755) en de
Kapelkerk (1762) te Alkmaar. Een unieke kans om kennis en ervaring ­
op te doen op deze topinstrumenten! Het thema van de Academie is
"Text, sound and registration in the Northern German choral
­repertoire". Het thema wordt diepgaand behandeld in de lezingen ­
en ­het programma.
The 13th International Organ Academy Alkmaar will be held from June
26th – July 4th 2015 and consists of workshops, masterclasses, concerts
and excursions. Participants work with international specialists on a
repertoire specifically attuned to the characteristics of the teaching
organs. Lessons take place in the Grote Sint Laurenskerk on both world
famous organs – the Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger organ (1646/1725) and

Pels & Van Leeuwen in ’s-Hertogenbosch. De begeleiding van de bouw en de intonatie ­
was in handen van Aart van Beek, gecommitteerde van de landelijke Orgelcommissie van de
(toenmalige) Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk. / In 2004 the organbuilders Pels & Van Leeuwen
in Den Bosch were commissioned to build a new organ. Aart van Beek, delegate of the national

De Stichting Internationaal Schnitger Orgelconcours is opgericht
in 1991. Zij stelt zich ten doel om muzikale evenementen te organiseren,
waaraan de naam Schnitger is verbonden. Daarmee wil zij tevens het
historisch orgelbezit van de stad Alkmaar nationaal en internationaal
onder de aandacht brengen. Het belangrijkste evenement is het
­tweejaarlijkse Orgel Festival Holland, met daarin het Internationaal
Schnitger Orgelconcours, een orgelacademie, concerten, lezingen en
andere activiteiten.
The International Schnitger Organ Competition Foundation was set up
in 1991. Its aim is to organize musical events connected to the name of
Schnitger, but also to draw national and international attention to the
historical organs of the City of Alkmaar. The main event is the bi-annual
Organ Festival Holland, including the International Schnitger Organ
Competition, an organ academy, concerts, lectures and other activities.

We are proud of the unique organs of Alkmaar. Because of their enormous international attraction,
young professional organists are coming to compete for the chance to win the great prize: the International Schnitger Organ Competiton. This has also attracted an international jury of top-experts ­
to come and share their knowledge and experience in the organ academy. The dedication of a large
group of volunteers, as well as the financial support of many generous contributors, have made it
possible for us to offer you this programme of great diversity. We are delighted to have you as our
