A NEW BEETHOVEN ORCHESTRA FOR A NEW CENTURY
Le Concert Olympique, le nouvel orchestre de Jan Caeyers, a été créé en 2010 et a
débuté par deux concerts retentissants au deSingel à Anvers. En mai et septembre
2011, deux nouvelles productions ont eu lieu, avec des concerts à Bruxelles (Flagey,
où l’orchestre est aussi en résidence), Anvers, Louvain et Hasselt. Dès 2012 les
premières invitations prestigieuses arrivent pour des concerts à l'étranger comme au
Concertgebouw à Amsterdam et le Musikverein à Vienne.
Jan Caeyers entend avec cet appareil d'orchestre propre donner une forme musicale
à sa vision approfondie de Beethoven (et des contemporains de ce dernier). C'est
pourquoi, il a réuni autour de lui 45 musiciens : des collègues et des amis qu'il a
appris à connaître à l'occasion de productions en Belgique et à l'étranger, et toute
une série de plus jeunes musiciens soigneusement triés sur le volet par ses soins.
Tous ces musiciens partagent avec le chef d'orchestre l'amour de la musique et
l'ambition de jouer d'une manière réfléchie la musique des Classiques viennois. Ils
veulent se mettre à la recherche d'un style d'exécution qui soit en même temps
fondé historiquement et contemporain.
Beethoven occupe évidemment la place centrale dans la programmation. Le Concert
Olympique ne jouera pas uniquement ses symphonies et ses concertos célèbres, mais
donnera également des compositions moins connues et rarement jouées de
Beethoven notamment les œuvres avec chœurs, programmé dans les saisons
prochaines avec le fameux Chœur Arnold Schönberg de Vienne. Pour certaines
productions, des interférences seront recherchées avec d'autres disciplines
artistiques. En même temps, la musique notamment de Haydn, Mozart, Schubert et
Mendelssohn garantira la perspective historico-musicale.
Le Concert Olympique ne se réunit que quelques fois par an. L'exclusivité de chaque
production doit en effet être garante d'une qualité élevée d'expérience et
d'engagement, tant chez les musiciens que chez le public. Le caractère festif des
concerts est en outre accentué par le fait remarquable que Le Concert Olympique est
habillé par la maison de mode anversoise Maison Anna Heylen. Cette collaboration
illustre l'ambition de base du Concert Olympique : associer l'intemporalité de la
tradition à une expérience fraîche, contemporaine.
Le Concert Olympique fait explicitement référence à Le Concert de la Société Olympique,
qui était entre 1782 et 1789 la plus importante organisation de concert à Paris. Le
Concert de la Société Olympique a surtout inspiré le respect pour la commande en 1785
de six symphonies chez Joseph Haydn (les Symphonies parisiennes). Cette commande
est généralement considérée comme la naissance de la symphonie classique
moderne. Le Concert de la Société Olympique était également installé au Palais Royal, le
berceau du mouvement progressiste, prérévolutionnaire et social en France.
Depuis 2013 Le Concert Olympique est « Orchestre en résidence à l’Université de
Leuven, structurellement parrainé par Ackermans & van Haaren, Elia, la KBC et
Telenet, et bénéficie du soutien de la Communauté Flamande.

Le Concert Olympique, het nieuwe orkest van Jan Caeyers, werd in 2010 opgericht en
debuteerde met twee ophefmakende concerten in deSingel te Antwerpen waar het
orkest van bij de start in residentie is. Sedertdien concerteert het in de belangrijkste
concertzalen in België: Brussel (Flagey, waar het orkest een tweede residentie heeft),
Antwerpen, Brugge, Leuven en Hasselt. Sedert 2012 is zij ook actief op
internationale concertpodia en trad zij op in prestigieuze zalen zoals het
Concertgebouw te Amsterdam en de Doelen te Rotterdam en in november 2013 in
het wereldvermaarde Musikverein in Wenen.
Jan Caeyers wil met dit eigen orkestapparaat zijn uitgediepte visie op Beethoven (en
diens tijdgenoten) muzikaal gestalte geven. Daarom heeft hij 45 musici rondom
zich geschaard: collega’s en vrienden die hij heeft leren kennen tijdens producties in
binnen- en buitenland en een hele reeks jongere muzikanten die hij zorgvuldig heeft
uitgekozen. Al deze musici delen met de dirigent de liefde voor de muziek en de
ambitie om op een verantwoorde wijze de muziek van de Weense Klassiekers te
spelen. Zij willen op zoek gaan naar een uitvoeringsstijl die tegelijkertijd historisch
gemotiveerd én eigentijds is.
Beethoven staat vanzelfsprekend centraal in de programmering. Le Concert
Olympique speelt niet alleen zijn bekende symfonieën en concerto’s, maar brengt
ook minder bekende en zelden gespeelde composities van Beethoven, waaronder
de grote koorwerken die de volgende seizoenen gebracht worden met het
beroemde Arnold Schönbergkoor uit Wenen. Bij sommige producties worden
interferenties gezocht met andere kunstdisciplines. Tegelijkertijd zorgt de muziek
van onder meer Haydn, Mozart, Schubert en Mendelssohn voor het
muziekhistorische perspectief.
Le Concert Olympique komt slechts enkele keren per jaar samen. De exclusiviteit van
elke productie moet immers garant staan voor een hoge kwaliteit van beleving en
betrokkenheid, zowel bij spelers als publiek. Het feestelijke karakter van de
concerten wordt bovendien vergroot door het opmerkelijke feit dat Le Concert
Olympique gekleed wordt door het Antwerpse modehuis Maison Anna Heylen. Deze
samenwerking illustreert de basisambitie van Le Concert Olympique : de tijdloosheid
van de traditie koppelen aan een frisse, eigentijdse beleving.
Le Concert Olympique verwijst expliciet naar Le Concert de la Société Olympique dat
tussen 1782 en 1789 de belangrijkste concertorganisatie in Parijs was. Le Concert de
la Société Olympique heeft vooral opzien gebaard door de bestelling in 1785 van zes
symfonieën bij Joseph Haydn (de Parijse symfonieën ). Deze bestelling wordt
algemeen beschouwd als de geboorte van de moderne klassieke symfonie.
Sedert 2013 is Le Concert Olympique ‘orkest in residentie’ van de Universiteit te
Leuven en wordt zij gesteund door de Vlaamse Gemeenschap. Daarnaast wordt zij
structureel gesponsord door Ackermans & van Haaren, Elia, KBC en Telenet.

When Le Concert Olympique was founded in 2010 as the brainchild of Beethoven
expert and conductor Jan Caeyers, it has struck a chord in the classical music world.
Le Concert Olympique represents a unique contemporary experience of a timeless
tradition, as well as a relevant performance of the canon, specifically the absolute
masterpieces by Beethoven and his contemporaries in order is to bring authentic,
relevant and referential performances.
The orchestra has 2 residencies in Belgium, id est in deSingel in Antwerp and in
Flagey in Brussels. As from 2012, it has been invited to acclaimed concert halls
such as the Vienna Musikverein, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and De Doelen in
Rotterdam.
Le Concert Olympique is both a world-wide project – its meticulously screened and
auditioned 45 players are recruited internationally and converge several times a year
to work intensively on an exclusive production – and a world-class project – its
orchestra is top-notch and its soloists are the world’s best. On an elemental level,
everyone shares the conductor’s enthusiasm: a love of music and the ambition to
perform the Viennese classics at the highest levels. The festive character is
emphasized by the fact that the musicians are dressed by famous clothes designer
Anna Heylen. This collaboration symbolizes the main mission of Le Concert
Olympique : to combine the timeless tradition with a fresh and vivid contemporary
experience.
The aim is as ambitious as it is simple: to be considered internationally as a top
reference Beethoven orchestra by 2020 (Beethoven's jubilee year), in terms of both
performance and experience. During the next coming seasons, not only the
symphonies and concerto’s are in the heart of the programming, but also lesser
known works such as the big vocal works that will be performed together with the
famous Arnold Schönberg Choir from Vienna.
The spirit is captured in the orchestra’s name, which evokes Le Concert de la
Société Olympique, the renowned Parisian concert organizer that commissioned
six symphonies from Joseph Haydn in the 1780s. Haydn’s music, performed in the
Palais-Royal, the birthplace if the progressive, pre-revolutionary social movement in
France, signaled with it the birth of the modern classical symphony.
As from 2013 Le Concert Olympique is ‘Orchestra in residence’ at the Leuven
University and supported by the Flemish Community. It is also structurally
sponsored by Ackermans & van Haaren, Elia, KBC and Telenet.
