In een tijdperk waar vele politici hun populariteit danken aan hun uitgesproken
aanvallen op de Israëlische politiek, komt er tegelijkertijd een groter besef dat de
agressieve, in vele gevallen ongebalanceerde uitspraken, in tegenspraak zijn met
de toekomstperspectieven van de Europese en Westerse Wereld.
Een groep van niet-joodse Europese en Amerikaanse politici en staatsmensen probeert via de “Friends of Israel Initiative” de weegschaal opnieuw recht te trekken.

Onder leiding van de voormalige Spaanse Eerste
José Maria Aznar, proberen ze de stiju Minister
gende delegitimatie van Israël te bekampen, haar
bestaansrecht te verdedigen alsook haar recht van
zelfverdediging.In het Brits parlement verklaarde Dhr. Aznar
“indien Israël ondergaat, gaan we allen samen ten onder”.
Medestichters van het initiatief zijn o.a. tevens John Bolton
(voormalig vertegenwoordiger van de Verenigde Staten bij
de Verenigde Naties), Alejandro Toledo (voormalig president van Peru), Marcello Pera (voormalig voorzitter van de
Italiaanse Senaat) en Britse historicus Andrew Roberts.
Deze centrumrechtse groep van politici is van plan vele Arabische Staten te bezoeken, de Verenigde Naties toe te spreken
alsook het Europees Parlement. Volgens de groep is de bedoeling “een open en redelijk debat te beginnen m.b.t. de
problemen van Israël, aansporen dat het behandeld wordt als
een normale democratie met alle valkuilen en te proberen de
automatische discriminatie weg te werken. Dan pas kunnen
wij beginnen met meer serieuze vragen”.

verwelkomde het initiatief door op te merken:
“Iemand heeft gezegd dat de ultieme doelstelling van het Europees antisemitisme
het zuiveren van de ziel van Europa
van haar Joden was.
Op dit ogenblik wordt
deze benadering
via anti-Israël
en
anti-Zionism retoriek
uitgebreid om te
proberen het MiddenOosten te reinigen van
de aanwezigheid van de
Joodse Staat. Het initiatief van prominente Europese leiders is van groot
belang om te proberen uit
te leggen dat Israël een normale democratie is”.
In een toespraak getiteld “Israël, onze voorvader” aan het Brits
Lagerhuis gaf Marcello Pera, een beredenering van de motivatie
die achter het initiatief ligt. Hierbij enkele uittreksels van zijn
toespraak:
“The culture of human rights was born and has flourished in
those countries that have been shaped by Judeo-Christianity.
Israel and the Jews are therefore central to the greatest political
achievements of the West.
Western democracy will not prevail unless we recognize and
assume the Judeo-Christian cultural and moral values that
first gave rise to the institutions and the values that initially
inspired them, and strengthen them. The assault on Israel is
itself an assault on Judeo-Christian values.
The same concept is
also expressed in the
last statement of the
document, where
it declares that we
intend to reaffirm
the value of the
religious, moral,
and cultural JudeoChristian heritage
as the main source
of the liberal and
democratic Western
society.
As our document
makes clear, the
signatories of the
Friends of Israel
initiative wish to highlight one concept. The culture of human rights was born and has flourished in those countries that
have been shaped by Judeo-Christianity. The Judeo-Christian
idea that men are created in God’s image and are responsible
toward Him for their actions has given rise to the concept of
the dignity of man. The concept of the dignity of man, of the
dignity of each single individual, supports the concept of human rights. And the concept of human rights is, in its turn, at
the basis of liberal and democratic regimes.
Consequently, in all respects Israel is our forefather. If its
culture disappears, our regimes may disappear, too. If the forefather’s heritage is endangered, we are in jeopardy as well. Israel, for us, is both a normal and a special country. A normal
country, because it is like any other democracy.
A special country, because the Jewish culture, which
eventually became the Judeo-Christian culture of the
dignity of man, is the conceptual foundation of liberalism and
democracy.
This is why attacking Israel is tantamount to attacking Europe and the West. This is also why disputing Israel’s legitimacy and its right to existence means questioning democracy.
And this is why we are Friends of Israel. By defending Israel,
we are defending ourselves.”

“Israel may be located in the Middle East, but it is
an integral part
of the West. The
one thing setting
it apart from the
rest is its status as
the only democracy
whose existence has
been questioned
since inception.
It is easy to blame
Israel for all the

world and some are even ready to sacrifice the future of Israel
if a new understanding with the Muslim world were to be
achieved in return. However, to weaken Israel is a serious
mistake since it is our first line of defence in the region; if
Israel fell into the hands of its enemies, the West as we know
it would cease to exist.
Israel, I repeat, is a fundamental constituent of the West.
The West is what it is, thanks to its Judeo-Christian roots. If
the Jewish part of those roots is upturned and Israel is lost,
then we are lost too. Today, to defend Israel is to defend the
West. With this initiative we aspire to make that reality ever
more patent.”
