Practical Unit 4; The animal kingdom.

In this unit we study the classification of animals. The animal kingdom is divided into 8 phyla (and
some phyla are divided into classes): unicellular animals, sponges, cnidarians, worms, molluscs,
arthropods (myriapods, crustaceans, arachnids and insects), echinoderms and vertebrates (fish,
amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals).
In this practical you’ll have a look at the different phyla of the animal kingdom. The phylum (and with
the vertebrates and arthropods also the class) of the different animals has to be given. Of all animals
three questions about features have to be correctly answered.
Make groups of three students. Each group starts at a different station. You get 2 minutes to pick a
animal (fill in the name) and answer the questions. After 2 minutes the groups move clockwise to the
next station without talking to the other groups. After 16 minutes the practical will be over and you
have to hand in the assignment paper. Good luck!!
Example:
Name animal: Garden spider
Phylum:
arthropods
Class*:
arachnids
Symmetry: bilaterally symmetric / radially symmetric / asymmetric
Skeleton:
internal skeleton / external skeleton / no skeleton
animals from this phylum/class only live in water: yes/ no
