WILLEM VAN MANEN
BIOGRAFIE
Willem van Manen werd geboren op 3 september 1940 te Amsterdam.
Opleiding
Vanaf zijn zevende jaar kreeg hij pianolessen van Joh. Röntgen, daarnaast had hij ook
trompetles. Op zijn vijftiende jaar koos hij voor trombone en kreeg zijn opleiding van Henk
van Bergen.
Daarnaast studeerde hij sociologie (na Gymnasium-ß).
Werkzaamheden
Vanaf 1968 is Van Manen actief als trombonist op het terrein van de jazz, de geïmproviseerde
en de hedendaagse muziek. Hij begon in de orkesten van Theo Loevendie, Boy Edgar, Hans
Dulfer, daarnaast bij de Instant Composers Pool, Gunter Hampel, Willem Breuker, Leo
Cuypers. Eigen orkesten: Boventoon (Wessel Ilckenprijs 1974), Spring-band, Contra-band.
Momenteel werkt hij freelance in binnen- en buitenland. Sinds de oprichting van het orkest
De Volharding in 1972 maakt hij daar deel van uit.
Hij is hoofdleraar trombone aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium te Amsterdam. Verder is hij
betrokken bij diverse organisaties op het gebied van de actuele muziek, zoals het BIM-huis te
Amsterdam en het Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst.
Composities
Als componist is Van Manen grotendeels autodidact; hij is als zodanig actief sinds 1975.
Prijzen
In 1992 werd hem de VPRO/Boy Edgar prijs toegekend voor zijn activiteiten op het gebied
van de jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek.
Compact discs
Op cd legde onder andere de Ereprijs werk van hem vast (label: Klimop), evenals Future
Shock (Timeless SJP 305), De Volharding (Attaca Babel 8953-6, NM-Classics 92021 en
Composers’ Voice CV 95) en Contraband (BVHaast CD 9802).

Willem van Manen was born in Amsterdam, September 3rd, 1940.
Education
From his seventh year onwards he had piano lessons with Johannes Röntgen and also was
given trumpet lessons. When he was fifteen, he chose for the trombone, taking lessons with
Henk van Bergen.
Besides, after having finished grammar-school, Van Manen studied social sciences.
Activities
From 1968 Van Manen has been active as a trombone player in the field of jazz, improvised
music and contemporary music. He has been a member of the orchestras of Theo Loevendie,
Boy Edgar, Hans Dulfer, and also worked with Instant Composers Pool, Gunter Hampel,
Willem Breuker, Leo Cuypers and others. His own orchestras: Boventoon (awarded the 1974
Wessel Ilcken Prize), Spring-band, Contra-band.
Van Manen now works as a free-lance musician in The Netherlands and abroad. He has been
a member of the orchestra De Volharding since its formation in 1972.
He is a trombone teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatory and is active in several
organizations in the field of actual music, such as the Amsterdam BIM-House and the Fund
for the Creation of Music.
Compositions
Van Manen is a mainly self-taught composer. His activities as a composer have started in
1975.
Prizes
In 1992 he was awarded the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize for jazz and improvised music.
