Prof. Dr. ir. Walter Steurbaut was tot 2012 Diensthoofd van de Vakgroep Gewasbescherming van de
Universiteit Gent. Hij is auteur van een 200-tal publicaties in nationale en internationale tijdschriften.
Hij was verantwoordelijk voor monitoring- en total-diet studies in België. Hij heeft innovatief onderzoek
uitgevoerd in methodieken voor de evaluatie en het meten van de humane en milieurisico’s van
pesticiden. Dit heeft geleid tot de ontwikkeling van bepaalde algemeen erkende indicatoren zoals
POCER, PRIBEL en EU-HAIR. Als Lid van de EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) Scientific
Panel on Pesticides (2002-2011) is hij (mede)auteur van tientallen opinies in het gebied van de
residuproblematiek en de humane en milieurisico’s. Naast heel wat nationale onderzoeksprogramma’s
neemt hij ook deel aan diverse 6FW en 7FW EU-projecten (HAIR, Browse, Vegitrade, Acropolis,
Opera). Dit heeft geleid tot belangrijke ontwikkelingen op gebied van pesticide classificatiesystemen
(Flandria-label), modellen voor blootstellingevaluatie bij het gebruik van pesticiden, probabilistische
evaluatie van de residuproblematiek in de voeding, duurzaam gebruik van pesticiden, e.d.m.. Hij is
ook actief op het gebied van registratie en regulatie van pesticiden en biociden in België als lid van het
Comité scheikundige stoffen van de Hoge Gezondheidsraad.

Prof. Dr. ir. Walter Steurbaut (Ghent University) was till 2012 head of the Department of Crop
Protection of the Ghent University. This has resulted in the publication of about 200 scientific
publications in national and international journals. He was responsible for monitoring and total-diet
studies in Belgium. His studies on methodologies for the evaluation and measurement of human and
environmental risk assessment has lead to the development of several general accepted indicators
such as POCER, PRIBEL and EU-HAIR. As member of the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority)
Scientific Panel on Pesticides (2002-2012) is he (co) author of several Opinions in the field of human
and environmental risk assessment of pesticides. Besides a lot of national research programs was he
also participating in EU 6th and 7th FW programs (HAIR, Brows, Vegitrade, Acropolis, Opera). This has
resulted in important developments in the framework of new classification systems of pesticides (e.g.
Flandria label), development of models for occupational exposure to pesticides, probabilistic methods
for estimation of consumer exposure to pesticide residues, sustainable use of pesticides, etc.. He is
also active in the field of pesticide registration and regulation as member of the committee on
chemicals of the High Council of Public Health of Belgium.
